Scalyr - Customer Case Study

Scalyr is a fast-growing startup (about 50 people) that offers a lightning-fast cloud platform for server monitoring, metrics, log analysis and error tracking. As they scaled, the company struggled to hire engineers efficiently: their pre-HackerRank process relied on high-level algorithm questions that often produced candidates who could think conceptually but couldn’t actually code, wasting valuable interview time for a small team.

To fix this they implemented HackerRank (CodeScreen and CodePair), championed by new Head of Engineering Bill Farner and integrated with their Greenhouse ATS. Within six months it became the hiring standard for ~90% of teams, enabling skills-first screening, realistic pair-programming interviews, faster qualification of candidates (including those hired for potential), and much less wasted interviewing time — helping Scalyr double its engineering org and spin off a new API team.
