Case Study: Verisk achieves skills-based hiring and improved diversity with HackerRank

How Verisk uses skills-based hiring to unlock hidden potential

Verisk, a global data and analytics company, faced a recruiting bottleneck for its Data Science Excellence Program—over 5,000 applicants for roughly 20 spots—where resumes often looked the same and formatting advantages masked true ability, disadvantaging first‑generation and otherwise underrepresented students.

To solve this, Verisk implemented skills‑based screening using HackerRank as the first technical round: a 90‑minute, multi‑language assessment designed and iterated by their data scientists. The change made screening scalable and more equitable, improved alignment between candidate skills and role needs, and contributed to stronger diversity outcomes (half of the incoming class is female) while preserving the program’s rotational development model.
