Santam Insurance Gains Agility to Serve a Complex, Hybrid Market

Santam Insurance, the largest general insurer in Africa with about 22% market share in South Africa and operations in Namibia, serves a wide range of personal, commercial, specialist and agricultural customers. Facing a complex, “world in one country” market—wide variation in customer needs and risks, regulatory and municipal challenges, intense competition, fraud, and a legacy mainframe that limited product agility—Santam needed a more flexible platform to innovate and scale.

Santam launched the Ignite programme and implemented Guidewire’s PolicyCenter, BillingCenter, Rating Management, Reinsurance Management and Client Data Management in an agile, phased rollout with partners including Guidewire, Cognizant and Nihilent. The modern integrated core has reduced TCO and integration effort, sped product and pricing changes, enabled automated underwriting and more scientific rating, improved broker servicing, and positioned Santam to tailor offerings by segment and expand into new territories.
