Earthquake Commission of New Zealand - Customer Case Study

The Earthquake Commission of New Zealand (EQC), a Crown entity that provides natural disaster insurance to residential property owners, needed a modern, web-based claims system that staff could access anytime from anywhere and that could instantly scale—its normal 3,000–4,000 annual claims could spike to 100,000–200,000 after a major disaster. EQC also needed better workflow management and visibility for a small, largely remote workforce and faster onboarding of surge adjusters.

EQC engaged IBM to design, deploy and host Guidewire ClaimCenter, a configurable end-to-end claims platform integrated with GeoNet and ESRI GIS for automated catastrophe event creation, mapping and claims linking. The implementation delivered automated task-driven workflows, improved adjuster workload visibility, faster training and deployment of remote teams, and a scalable, cost-effective system that lets EQC focus on claimant relationships during large-scale events.
