Squarespace faced a classic scale-up hiring challenge: in 2014 the company had about 200 employees and needed to more than double its workforce while competing for engineers against much larger tech firms — all with a technical recruiting team of just three people. Attracting top engineering talent required a standout approach that reflected Squarespace’s culture and New York roots.
Their solution was a branded, immersive recruiting campaign — originally “Be a Part of It,” now NYCommit — that flew candidates (and their partners) to NYC for a long weekend of curated experiences, backed by a dedicated landing page, an online coding test for screening, and a switch to the Greenhouse ATS for better measurement and prospecting. The campaign drew over 2,000 applicants, resulted in multiple hires (five from the initial program), was expanded the following year, and helped the company grow toward its current headcount of nearly 500.
