USDA - Customer Case Study

The United States Department of Agriculture’s National Agricultural Library (USDA NAL), one of the nation’s leading repositories for agricultural science, needed a way to make USDA-funded research data more accessible, machine‑readable, and compliant with the federal open data directive. The library sought a platform to publish large amounts of historical and ongoing research so scientists and the public could find, download, and analyze data to support long-term agricultural and environmental research.

USDA NAL partnered with GovDelivery to deploy DKAN, an open‑source, Drupal‑based data portal (Ag Data Commons) that enables flexible publication, organization, citation, and visualization of datasets. Since launch the platform has supported genomics projects (e.g., five VPGC datasets), published 107 LTAR datasets, and reached users in 120 countries, improving collaboration, transparency, and long‑term data access for the research community.
