Case Study: Port of Tacoma achieves 40% engagement and faster stakeholder outreach with Granicus

A Granicus Case Study

Preview of the Port of Tacoma Case Study

Port of Tacoma Uses Digital Communication to Engage Two Very Different Audiences

The Port of Tacoma, a major North American container gateway, needed a better way to deliver timely, audience-specific information. Its previous commercial email tool didn’t integrate with internal systems and fell short on deliverability, automation and mobile outreach, leaving distinct audiences — residents/taxpayers and customers like shippers and truck drivers — underserved.

Following focus groups that showed stakeholders prefer email and mobile updates, the port adopted Granicus’ GovDelivery Communications Cloud to deliver automated, multichannel alerts and subscription-based topics. Since 2010 the port has launched 252 topics, grown to 23K+ subscribers with a 40% engagement rate and sent 614K messages, improving efficiency, aiding a 2012 shipping transition that added 25% more cargo, boosting stakeholder satisfaction, and increasing community engagement (including filling public tours months in advance).
