How the Wasatch County, Utah Assessor’s Office used technology to identify tax revenue

Wasatch County, Utah’s Assessor’s Office needed a better way to accurately classify homes as primary or secondary residences and ensure property taxes were applied fairly. Working with Granicus, the county used Host Compliance and TrueRoll to replace a manual process that was slow and made it difficult to identify properties that shouldn’t receive a residential exemption.

Granicus helped the office pinpoint short- and long-term rentals and determine owners’ most probable domicile, making the review process much more efficient. As a result, research time dropped from 60 minutes to 30 minutes per case, and 350 properties were identified, uncovering about $1.8 million in tax revenue to be redistributed and helping lower the tax burden for other Wasatch County taxpayers.
