A Granicus Case Study
HealthData.gov, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ public catalog of health, social services, and research data, needed to modernize a five-year-old repository to improve access and usability for researchers, providers, and payers. HHS required a platform that could aggregate disparate “big data,” produce machine-readable datasets, integrate with its Drupal workflow, and offer long-term flexibility plus hands-on support to drive user adoption and better site performance.
HHS partnered with GovDelivery’s Open Data team (Granicus) and implemented DKAN, a Drupal-based open-source data platform, to enable deep customization, cataloging, visualization, and integrated communications and support. Launched in beta in June 2015, the rebuilt HealthData.gov now hosts more than 2,000 datasets from federal and local agencies, has increased data reuse by developers and organizations, and continues to roll out features—like enhanced user feedback—to boost engagement and access to critical health data.
