A Granicus Case Study
The City of Austin wanted to increase grassroots public engagement to support its goal of becoming the most livable city, but its outreach was inconsistent across 30 departments and relied mainly on in‑person hearings, email, and phone. To involve residents earlier in decision making and ensure all neighborhoods were heard, the city looked for a unified online platform to capture feedback, ideas, and discussion.
After implementing Granicus’ SpeakUp in 2008 and integrating it with traditional civic channels, Austin has engaged over 3,313 citizens directly and reached more than 10,000 in city planning efforts, generating 1,024 ideas, putting 65 into action and fully implementing 26 changes. The tool continues to inform major projects—most recently soliciting input on trash and recycling changes—helping the city make more inclusive, community-driven policy decisions.
