Tokopedia Scaling to accommodate major shopping events with Google Kubernetes Engine

Tokopedia, one of Indonesia’s leading marketplace platforms, needed to scale reliably for huge shopping events and live commerce while improving performance, resiliency, and analytics. Working with Google Cloud Platform and products including Google Kubernetes Engine, BigQuery, Cloud Load Balancing, and Cloud CDN, Tokopedia aimed to support millions of users and merchants without downtime.

Google Cloud Platform helped Tokopedia rebuild Tokopedia Play on GKE, add autoscaling and global load balancing, and use BigQuery and Cloud CDN for faster data analysis and smooth video delivery. The results were significant: Tokopedia Play grew from 55,000 to 1.5 million concurrent users, handled a 20x traffic surge, scaled down servers by 30x after events, reduced operating costs by 90%, and delivered live video in as little as 700 milliseconds.
