A Google Cloud Platform Case Study
Swisscom, Switzerland’s largest telecommunications provider, set out to become a cloud-first digital business to offset declining traditional telco revenues. The company needed to modernize and decouple its systems, open network capabilities to partners and developers, and create new business models by turning programmable services into productized APIs.
Swisscom implemented Apigee (now part of Google Cloud) for on‑premises API management, built a developer portal and upcoming Digital Marketplace, and adopted an API‑as‑product approach. The move delivered 159 APIs supporting 70 consumer apps and about 500 million API calls per year, saved millions in efficiencies, unlocked tens of millions in new revenue, and is driving roughly 20% annual API growth.
