Safaricom Harnessing the power of APIs to transform lives in Africa

Safaricom, Kenya’s largest telecommunications provider, needed a faster, more secure way to integrate its M-PESA mobile payment APIs with partners. Its old process was slow, costly, difficult to scale, and required separate connections and manual testing, creating customer complaints and limiting growth. Safaricom turned to Google Cloud Platform’s Apigee API Platform to help simplify API exposure and partner integration.

With Google Cloud Platform’s Apigee, Safaricom could securely publish internal and external APIs, speed development and deployment, and use tools like Trace and proxy building to manage APIs more easily. The result was a much larger ecosystem of 4,500+ partners, API publishing times cut to as little as a week, and stronger security and scalability. Apigee’s monetization features also added commercial value, contributing 11% of Safaricom’s B2B and B2C revenue in early 2019.
