Funding Circle, an online marketplace connecting small businesses with loans, faced a payments bottleneck as it scaled rapidly: paper Direct Debit mandates and manual reconciliation were time-consuming, error-prone and threatened to limit growth. In 2014 the company chose GoCardless for its API, simple interface and Direct Debit compliance to automate and future‑proof its repayments process.

Funding Circle integrated GoCardless via the REST API (later upgrading to GoCardless Pro) to automate mandate capture, payments and reporting. The move enabled them to process over 40,000 repayments a month, achieve a 97% first‑attempt Direct Debit mandate completion rate, cut manual work and reconciliation time, improve customer experience and reporting for investors, and strengthen compliance — all while preventing payments from becoming a growth constraint.
