The British Institute of Radiology (BIR), a 2,800‑member international society for imaging and radiation professionals, faced a slow, paper‑based Direct Debit process that required posting mandates, waiting over two weeks for returns, and dealing with incomplete or incorrect mandates that led to failed payments and heavy admin. To modernise payments and improve retention, BIR implemented the GoCardless solution using the GoCardless–Fonteva integration.

GoCardless replaced manual tasks with an online Direct Debit flow integrated into Fonteva, automated notifications and mandate updates, and removed most intervention from staff. As a result, over 90% (key metric 95%) of new members now sign up with Direct Debit via GoCardless, UK Direct Debit uptake among existing members rose 50% in the first five months, nearly two days of admin time are saved each month, retention among Direct Debit payers sits at ~90%, and BIR expects reduced fees and better revenue predictability thanks to GoCardless.
