Rakuten tested whether machine or human translation would convert better for high-volume e-commerce listings. Working with Gengo, the challenge was to cost-effectively translate 250 product pages and determine which approach drove more sales on Rakuten’s site.

Gengo translated all 250 listings in under 48 hours via API at about $7.25 per listing (<$10), and the human-translated pages lifted conversion from 4.21% to 4.89% (+16%). On 100,000 visitors with a $125 average sale that translated to $611,250 vs $526,250—an $85,000 uplift (about $83,188 net after the ~$1,812 setup cost).
