Case Study: Replica improves pedestrian safety insights with Foursquare Studio

A Foursquare Case Study

Replica maps 50,000 NYC intersections with Foursquare to improve pedestrian safety

Replica, a provider of urban mobility and demographic data, needed to analyze how New York City's intersection redesign efforts could best improve pedestrian safety. Their challenge was to move beyond simple traffic metrics and understand the complex factors contributing to incidents across thousands of city intersections. To achieve this, they utilized the data visualization capabilities of Foursquare Studio from vendor Foursquare.

Foursquare's solution allowed Replica to input their comprehensive intersection data into Studio to create interactive visual maps. This enabled clear analysis for policymakers. The results revealed that the busiest intersections were not always the most dangerous; instead, Foursquare Studio helped identify that intersections with higher travel from lower-income areas had higher incident rates, exposing issues of equity. This allowed Replica to provide targeted safety recommendations, including for areas with high senior citizen mobility.
