A FICO Case Study
California State Automobile Association (CSAA), an AAA affiliate serving about 4 million members in California, Nevada and Utah, faced rapid growth—written premium rising ~40% annually—and was processing roughly 1,000 new auto applications per day. Its legacy underwriting system forced nearly all applications into manual review, creating delays, inconsistency and pressure to add underwriters; CSAA aimed to automate roughly half of new business approvals to avoid scaling headcount.
CSAA implemented a Decision Management platform using FICO Blaze Advisor for .NET and predictive analytic models, separating business rules from application code and integrating with its .NET environment. The solution automates lower-risk approvals, optimizes third‑party data ordering, and enables business users to change rules quickly; as a result manual review has dropped by up to 80%, CSAA now automatically underwrites about 55% of new applications (with potential to increase), delivering faster decisions, consistent underwriting and rapid ROI.
