Air Products and Chemicals, a global supplier of industrial, process and specialty gases, faced a slow, error-prone material master creation process after rolling out SAP. Master-data knowledge was dispersed across teams, reliant on Excel handoffs and manual approvals, which created bottlenecks, inconsistent data and cycle times that stretched to 45 days—threatening customer response times and forcing the company to consider hiring 10–15 additional staff to meet demand.

Air Products implemented a web-based Material Master Automation application that integrates FICO Blaze Advisor rules with SAP Workflow to validate requests at point of entry, route approvals and provide contextual help. The rules-driven automation consolidated the process, enabling up to 200 requests per day without new hires, cutting turnaround from 45 days to often the same day, reducing costs and rework, and turning tribal knowledge into a shared organizational asset.
