Energy Company Deploys VMware View and F5 Solution for Better Remote Access, Stronger Performance

VMware confronted a requirement to deliver reliable remote access and modern desktop virtualization for a large, mobile energy company’s field workers and executives, while also managing traffic across a new multi-site data center and replacing outdated desktop software. To support VMware View deployments and ensure secure mobile access (including iPad users), they sought an integrated SSL VPN and traffic-management solution and engaged F5 Networks and its BIG-IP portfolio.

F5 Networks implemented BIG-IP LTM, BIG-IP APM, BIG-IP GTM and the BIG-IP Edge Client to provide SSL VPN, intelligent traffic management, global load direction, and secure mobile single sign-on. The integrated solution delivered secure, anytime access to VMware View, improved ThinApp performance and availability, consolidated services and hardware, reduced application counts to about 1,500, and achieved high user satisfaction (over 99%); a proof-of-concept ran for 800 users with plans to scale to 6,000.
