Developing people through functional competency assessment

AkzoNobel, a leading global paints and coatings company, worked with vendor Expert Training Systems (ETS) to address a need for a better way to stimulate employee learning and personal development on a self-initiated basis. They wanted a flexible assessment solution that could support self-assessments and multi-rater feedback across their global workforce of 50,000 employees at 150 sites.

Expert Training Systems built a bespoke functional competency assessment platform for AkzoNobel, enabling self, 180-degree, and 360-degree assessments, plus push assessments initiated by managers or central teams. The solution supported multiple competency frameworks and saved assessments for review, and ETS also provided consultancy on framework design. The result was a very positive employee response and confidence that the tool would strengthen capability and development planning across the business, with further interface improvements and a questionnaire builder planned.
