Xylem cuts impeller core lead times from 7 days to 2 with ExOne

Xylem, a world-leading water technology company, faced challenges in manufacturing water-pump impeller cores. Their traditional core-shooting process was slow, taking seven days, and resulted in defective cast parts due to the need to glue multiple core halves together. To modernize production and improve quality, they turned to vendor ExOne for a solution using the S-Max binder jet 3D printing service.

ExOne implemented its binder jetting process to 3D print the impeller cores as a single piece from silica sand, eliminating the need for gluing multiple parts. This solution slashed the production time from seven days to just 48 hours and enabled just-in-time manufacturing. The quality of the cast parts improved significantly, and production costs for certain parts decreased by approximately 30%.
