A ExOne Case Study
The customer, Tooling & Equipment International (TEI), a supplier to General Motors, needed to produce large, complex, and lightweight structural castings for the Cadillac CELESTIQ EV. Their challenge was to economically manufacture these components with optimized designs that were not feasible using conventional methods. To meet this need, TEI collaborated with vendor ExOne and utilized their VX4000 3D sand printers.
ExOne's solution involved providing TEI with three VX4000 printers to additively manufacture sand cores for the vehicle's underbody structure. This allowed TEI to incorporate stiffening features into hollow sections and produce six large castings that each replaced 30 to 40 individual components. The results included significantly reduced delivery times, a leaner production process, and the ability to series produce weight-saving, geometrically optimized parts. TEI expanded its capacity to 2.5 million liters of printed sand per year to support this project.
