HV3DWorks Uses ExOne Binder Jet 3D Printing to Replace a Damaged 65-Year-Old Fuel Pump

HV3DWorks LLC worked with ExOne to reproduce a damaged Corteco fuel pump body for a 1951 Alfa Romeo 6C 2500 engine. The original part was more than 65 years old, made of pot metal, and cracking in several places, creating an urgent need for a replacement that would fit and function properly.

ExOne supported the project with binder jet 3D printing on an ExOne M-Flex metal printer, starting with plastic prototypes to verify fit before producing the final part in 316 stainless steel infiltrated with bronze. The redesigned fuel pump body included added wall thickening and fillets, was completed in 10 weeks, and cost less than half the price of an original part, saving the customer about $1,500.
