How 3D printing transformed a family-owned manufacturer

Humtown Products is a third-generation, family-owned foundry pattern shop in Columbiana County, Ohio, facing a shrinking foundry market and long lead times from traditional coremaking. To modernize and compete, Humtown partnered with ExOne in 2016 and installed an ExOne S-Max sand 3D printer to move from pattern- and mold-based workflows to direct 3D-printed sand molds and cores.

ExOne’s S-Max solution — now three S-Max printers at Humtown — eliminated many tooling steps, reduced labor, scrap and inventory, and cut core turnaround from weeks or months to days. The shift expanded Humtown’s services (over 100 NDAs, global customers), enabled consolidated complex cores, and drove measurable scale: about 125 tons of sand 3D printed per month while running machines 24/7, helping Humtown grow into a high-volume sand-core supplier.
