Equal Justice Initiative creates three bronze sculptures with ExOne in 12 months

The Equal Justice Initiative (EJI) commissioned artist Rayvenn Shaleigha D’Clark to create three large bronze sculptures for the Freedom Monument Sculpture Park. The challenge was to produce these 2.7-meter tall, highly detailed sculptures in a way that was less complex, time-consuming, and impractical than traditional methods. EJI partnered with ExOne to utilize their 3D sand printing technology for this project.

ExOne implemented a solution using their VX4000 3D printing system with binder jetting technology. Digital CAD files were used to directly print the negative sand molds for the sculptures, eliminating the need for traditional model-making and allowing for the precise reproduction of fine details. The molds were then cast in bronze. This process provided considerable time and cost savings compared to conventional techniques, enabling the creation of these durable, complex monuments that honor the courage and resilience of enslaved people.
