Complex Mold Production Reduces Lead Time by 9 Weeks & Saves Thousands

PumpWorks Castings, LLC was engaged by MW Smith DXP Engineers to produce two replacement compressor cylinders for an obsolete compressor under an aggressive schedule. The customer faced complex casting geometry and needed to cut estimated lead time from about 17+ weeks down to 8 weeks without traditional tooling, so they turned to ExOne and its 3D sand mold printing technology.

Using ExOne’s sand-printing process (silica sand with furan binder), PumpWorks printed the complex molds in roughly 7 days and had molds ready for pour in about 1 week, meeting the 8-week delivery. ExOne’s solution eliminated the roughly $70,000 tooling cost, reduced total production time from ~16–17 weeks to 8 weeks (about a 9-week reduction), and enabled the compressor repairs to begin immediately, saving thousands.
