Accelerating Delivery Time of a Complex Casting with Sand 3D Printing

Max Motor Service Center in Thailand needed to replace four complex double-suction impellers for a client within six weeks, but traditional wood-pattern molding would have required a 15‑week lead time and risked core-shift issues that jeopardized casting accuracy. The company worked with Speed 3D Mold and used ExOne technology — specifically the ExOne S-Max® binder jet sand 3D printer — to find an alternative to conventional tooling.

Speed 3D Mold digitally redesigned the castings and printed four silica‑sand/furan binder mold-and-core packages in one S-Max job box, cutting casting lead time from 15 weeks to just seven days and delivering perfect casting quality with minimal post‑processing. Using the ExOne S-Max® system eliminated costly wood patterns and storage, improved geometry and accuracy, and delivered large cost savings (Max Motor reported paying roughly one‑tenth of the expected part value), while enabling machining and final delivery within the accelerated schedule.
