A EXL Case Study
EXL worked with a leading U.S. life insurance company that needed to digitize large volumes of historical attending physician statement (APS) documents. These files were long, unstructured, and medically complex, making manual review slow, costly, and dependent on specialized expertise. The company wanted a faster way to extract key medical impairments and entities to strengthen mortality risk models and underwriting decisions.
EXL implemented its XTRAKTO.AI solution, using AI, NLP, computer vision, and medical domain taxonomy to automate extraction from APS documents. The platform identified impairments with 90–97% accuracy, processed about 30 million APS pages in four weeks, and delivered more than 185 medical features per document, including diagnoses, ICD codes, medications, and HCC indicators. The solution also included an interface for rapid human validation, helping EXL improve extraction quality at scale.
