Case Study: Vodafone achieves 14% energy savings with Ericsson Machine Learning MIMO Sleep Mode automation

A Ericsson Case Study

Preview of the Vodafone Case Study

Ericsson’s Managed Services offering delivers enhanced performance of Vodafone Netherlands’ network

Vodafone, one of the world’s largest telecommunications companies, needed a way to reduce the energy consumption of its always-on mobile network without affecting service quality. In collaboration with Ericsson, Vodafone looked at automating MIMO Sleep Mode management for radio sites so they could save power during low-traffic periods while still meeting customer performance requirements.

Ericsson implemented a machine learning-based Sleep Mode solution trained on site-specific traffic data to predict when to activate or exit Sleep Mode autonomously. In tests across six MIMO radio sites in Portugal, the Ericsson solution delivered an average 14% reduction in energy consumption per site with no negative impact on consumer KPIs, including latency and bandwidth.
