Case Study: EE (UK’s largest mobile operator) achieves resilient, low-latency 4G rollout at scale with Equinix (LD5 data centre provider)

A Equinix Case Study

Preview of the EE Case Study

Equinix LD5 Data Centre supports the delivery of the UK’s first 4G Network with EE

EE, the UK’s largest mobile operator with 27 million customers and the first to roll out 4G, needed to consolidate four Internet Points of Presence into two resilient data centres and find infrastructure that could scale for rapidly growing mobile data and video traffic while keeping latency extremely low.

After an RFP process EE selected Equinix’s LD5 in Slough and a Docklands site, running two PoPs in an active‑active 1+1 configuration for automatic failover. The move delivered direct peering with major content providers and CDNs, saved at least 20 ms round‑trip latency, provided access to more than 90 networks and diverse fibre routes, and gave EE the resilience and connectivity needed to support exponential 4G data and video growth.
