The Goldring Center for Culinary Medicine at Tulane University Teaching People How to Cook Again

The Goldring Center for Culinary Medicine at Tulane University, founded in 2012, combines hands-on cooking classes with clinical nutrition to improve community health. To scale this nontraditional, food-first approach across patients, medical students, and local providers, the center needed a flexible healthcare IT partner to capture clinical data and support community outreach.

Using eClinicalWorks EHR with Patient Engagement and Population Health tools, staff track blood pressure, hemoglobin A1c, cholesterol, medications, and customized dietary templates while coordinating referrals and communication. The program has helped patients lose weight and better manage hypertension and diabetes—raising the share of patients with controlled blood pressure from 53% to 78%—and generated evidence supporting broader integration of nutrition education into medical practice.
