The Dun & Bradstreet D-U-N-S® Number & Public Health

Dun & Bradstreet partnered with the FDA to address a critical public-health challenge under the Food Safety Modernization Act: how to reliably identify and locate roughly 200,000 domestic and foreign food facilities when inspection resources are limited and self-reported registration data can be inaccurate. To strengthen the agency’s ability to prevent foodborne illness and improve regulatory oversight, the FDA formally recognized the D-U-N-S Number as an acceptable unique facility identifier (UFI).

By adopting the D-U-N-S Number as the UFI and integrating it into its Master Data Management strategy, the FDA gained a single authoritative identifier for facility records. Dun & Bradstreet’s closed-loop entity resolution, global data stewardship and on-site verification expanded the agency’s verification capacity, sped product admissibility, increased inspection efficiency and produced cost savings—advancing data harmonization and interoperability across domestic and international facility records.
