Case Study: Southern Water achieves enhanced storm preparedness and fewer outages with DTN WeatherSentry

A DTN Case Study

Preview of the Southern Water Case Study

Ensuring safe, sustainable water in an increasingly-stressed environment

Southern Water, a utility serving southeast England, faced growing operational risk from extreme weather after a lightning strike disabled a sensitive pumping station in July 2021. Already a long-term customer of DTN using HydroMaster and HydroCast, Southern Water sought greater hyperlocal visibility and selected DTN’s WeatherSentry to deliver real-time weather mapping, location-driven forecasts, and automated alerts.

DTN implemented WeatherSentry with layered maps, lightning and wind watches, sub-seasonal forecasts and direct support from DTN meteorologists, enabling Southern Water to stand up a weather impact team five days before Storm Eunice. The proactive response—positioning 130 tankers, 30 mobile generators and 8 diesel pump sets—helped keep customer outages under 300 during Eunice (compared with nearly 10,000 during the 2018 “Beast from the East”), recorded no pollution or injuries, and improved operational confidence and regulatory performance.
