A dscout Case Study
Dropbox, a leading file storage and collaboration platform, faced a challenge when developing its new desktop application. The company wanted to shift user behavior from passive, background browser usage to active, foreground engagement with the app as a central workspace. As the sole researcher on the project, Meghan Earley needed to move beyond quick usability tests to gain longitudinal, in-context insights into how users interacted with the product in their daily workflows, a task that required scaling research without scaling her team. To achieve this, Dropbox turned to the vendor dscout.
Using dscout's platform, Dropbox implemented a four-week longitudinal study that combined diary entries and video recordings from participants. This approach allowed the team to observe authentic user experiences and identify key usability issues that repeated over time. The solution provided by dscout enabled stakeholders to asynchronously engage with the research, leading to increased investment. As a result, Dropbox gained a complete understanding of critical problems, which directly informed its design direction and helped the team remove blockers to user collaboration.
