Doncaster Council, a local government in the UK, had extensive quantitative data from surveys but lacked a deep understanding of the daily lives and unmet needs of the families and teens in their community. To address this, they partnered with the vendor dscout and the research firm Eclipse Experience to conduct an ethnographic study using dscout's mobile diary study platform for real-time insights.

The solution implemented by dscout involved a two-pronged approach combining in-home interviews with mobile ethnography. Teens used the dscout app to document their experiences in real-time, which provided rich, qualitative data that revealed crucial insights into support networks, safe spaces, and service gaps. This allowed Doncaster Council to develop more user-centered, holistic services, ultimately convincing previously skeptical members of the value of layering qualitative depth on top of quantitative data.
