Smart Choice®, a national network of over 3,400 independent insurance agents working with 80 carriers, faced a costly, paper-intensive process for processing monthly carrier commission statements. A team of four to five employees spent a week each month entering data, folding and stuffing up to 4,000 pages to meet the 15th deadline, creating risk of errors and limiting scalability as the company grew.

Smart Choice implemented DocuWare with a barcode-based scanning and Excel integration to extract, index and securely store statement pages, then provide agents with self-serve online access to only their pages. The change eliminated physical printing and mailing, saved about 200 man-hours per month (allowing three staff to move into sales), delivered immediate ROI, generated new ad revenue from the portal, and enabled a new online sales model (Smart Start) that streamlined quoting and binding.
