BUTEC GmbH is a European consulting firm (founded 1995) specializing in environmental protection, quality management and workplace safety. As client numbers and long-term projects grew, consultants struggled with mountains of paper, slow searches and duplicated effort; they needed a flexible document management system with open configuration, simple administration and full‑text search to build a central knowledge pool.

In 2003 BUTEC implemented DocuWare: scanned incoming paper, organized customer‑specific and central “Knowledge & Law” file cabinets, and added workflow (InnoFlow), indexing, stamps/status tracking and remote access. The result: consultants retrieve documents in minutes (clients can receive proof of permissions in under five minutes), paper access dropped to about 3–5%, storage and processing became more efficient, customer service improved and the solution paid for itself quickly.
