A Descartes Case Study
TOMRA, a recycling and materials-handling company operating across North America, faced major route-planning challenges due to its seasonal business and manually managed dispatch process. With fluctuating pickup volumes, varying stop counts by region, and limited visibility into driver performance and customer service, TOMRA needed a more sophisticated logistics tool. Descartes Routing and Scheduling was selected to help streamline planning and improve operational control.
Descartes implemented a wireless, centralized dispatch model across TOMRA’s 16 sites in six states, supported by route optimization, real-time GPS visibility, and detailed reporting. The result was an average productivity lift of 5% to 8% across the business, fewer vehicles needed at some locations, improved service predictability, and lower fuel and labor costs. With Descartes, TOMRA also gained the flexibility to adjust routes on the fly and manage growth without adding capital costs.
