Leggett & Platt, a global manufacturer with thousands of customers and 250 facilities across 20 countries, was struggling to manage ocean shipments using manual processes and spreadsheets. The company had limited visibility into shipments across 10 carriers, especially foreign-to-foreign moves, and needed better tracking, reporting, and customs compliance. With Descartes, Leggett & Platt automated ocean freight audits, electronic carrier data exchange, shipment tracking, reporting, and customs compliance processes. Audit coverage increased from about 25% to 80%, bill of lading error rates of 10% to 15% were virtually eliminated, and 225 users gained online real-time access to shipment status worldwide. Descartes also helped standardize broker usage, cut months of manual work from carrier contract negotiations, and improved reporting accuracy and customer service.
