MakeSpace is a New York–based tech-driven storage startup that lets customers schedule pickup and retrieval of belongings via a smartphone app. As the company grew from a handful of drivers to operations across multiple states, its scheduling and time-tracking processes—initially Excel sheets and paper punch cards—became unworkable and needed a scalable, easy-to-use solution that would work for both field workers and managers and handle regional regulatory differences.

MakeSpace implemented Deputy for scheduling, timekeeping and workforce management, using its kiosk feature, PIN/mobile check-ins, and backend manager tools; integration with Gusto and Deputy’s open API allowed rapid customization for California labor rules. The result: seamless shift trading and communications, greater visibility into driver time, growth from 4 to 180 employees across four cities, and payroll time reduced from 1.5 days to about 30 minutes every two weeks—making Deputy an indispensable part of operations.
