Case Study: Mercury Marine achieves 24x faster engineering simulations with Dell Technologies

A Dell Technologies Case Study

Preview of the Mercury Marine Case Study

World’s largest builder of marine propulsion systems leverages HPC on demand to meet peak computing demands for engineering simulations

Mercury Marine, the world’s largest builder of marine propulsion systems, needed on‑demand high‑performance computing to run complex CFD and FEA simulations that often exceed its in‑house capacity. To address those peak demands it leveraged Dell Technologies solutions (delivered through partner R Systems), including HPC on Demand and Dell EMC PowerEdge Modular Infrastructure with Intel® Xeon® processors and Dell EMC PowerSwitch networking.

Using R Systems’ HPCaaS running on Dell EMC PowerEdge servers allowed Mercury Marine to burst into the cloud and run multiple hydrodynamics jobs concurrently; the Dell Technologies infrastructure reduced a typical simulation run from about 48 hours to just 2 hours. The result: dramatically faster design and engineering cycles, shorter time to market, lower product‑development costs and the ability to validate many more virtual iterations for more durable, robust products.
