Case Study: University of Pisa achieves greater IT flexibility and resource utilization with Dell Technologies

A Dell Technologies Case Study

Preview of the University of Pisa Case Study

The University of Pisa gains greater flexibility and value from its IT infrastructure with Dell EMC hardware and VMware virtualization software

The University of Pisa needed a more flexible, performant IT infrastructure to support a wide range of teaching, research and HPC workloads. Partnering with Dell Technologies, the university modernized its environment using Dell EMC hardware and VMware virtualization software (notably VMware vSphere and Horizon) to better serve faculty, students and researchers.

Dell Technologies implemented clusters built from Dell EMC PowerEdge servers, PowerSwitch networking, VMware vSAN hyperconverged storage, PowerVault and Isilon arrays, Data Domain with Veeam backup and VMware Horizon VDI (with GPU nodes for ML/HPC), plus centralized management via OpenManage. The rollout improved resource utilization, sped provisioning and workload migration, simplified disaster recovery, and delivered measurable impact — about 600 Dell servers in production and roughly half of researchers now running workloads on virtualized infrastructure.
