Case Study: University of Florida accelerates data-intensive scientific discovery with Dell Technologies' HiPerGator supercomputer

A Dell Technologies Case Study

Preview of the University of Florida Case Study

The University of Florida enables research with a powerful supercomputer from Dell Technologies

The University of Florida needed leading‑edge high performance computing to support thousands of computationally intense research projects across medicine, engineering, agriculture and the social sciences. To meet that need, Dell Technologies delivered the HiPerGator supercomputer using Dell EMC PowerEdge servers with Intel® Xeon® processors, a Lustre parallel file system and a Mellanox® interconnect to provide scalable, research‑grade infrastructure.

Dell Technologies implemented and expanded HiPerGator (HiPerGator 2.0), adding 30,000 cores to bring the system to more than 46,000 CPU cores, a 3‑petabyte high‑performance Lustre file system and 120 TB of RAM, increasing compute capacity by over a petaflop. The system now supports more than 1,300 diverse applications, accelerates data‑intensive studies and helps UF researchers win funded projects—the university reported $776 million in research funding in 2019—demonstrating measurable impact from Dell Technologies’ solution.
