State of Michigan consolidates data protection and storage, capturing $4 million in cost savings and productivity gains

The State of Michigan faced the challenge of protecting and managing more than 100 petabytes of data across 60 government offices and 48,000 employees while cutting costs and meeting regulatory requirements. To address this, the State engaged Dell Technologies, deploying Dell EMC Data Domain, Dell EMC Data Protection Software, Dell EMC storage platforms (Isilon, XtremIO X2, Unity) and VMware to consolidate data protection and storage.

Dell Technologies implemented a consolidated Dell EMC infrastructure—backing up data to Data Domain appliances with replication and cloud-tiering—streamlining integration with VMware and simplifying management. The consolidation delivered measurable results: $4 million in licensing, maintenance and storage savings in four years, deduplication reduced 140 PB to 2 PB of backup storage, faster backups, protection for roughly 2,500 VMs and 500 servers, and improved DBA productivity.
