Case Study: Spire achieves near‑real‑time space-to‑cloud analytics and improved weather forecasting with Dell Technologies

A Dell Technologies Case Study

Preview of the Spire Case Study

Spire - Customer Case Study

Spire, a space-to-cloud analytics company that operates a global nanosatellite constellation and ground‑station network, needed simplified access to high‑performance computing to process massive, high‑velocity satellite data and deliver near‑real‑time maritime, aviation and weather insights. To solve this, Spire deployed a Dell Technologies OEM Engineered Solution in collaboration with R Systems, using R Systems’ HPC Managed Services with bare‑metal Dell EMC PowerEdge servers, Dell EMC PowerSwitch/InfiniBand networking and parallel file systems.

Using the Dell Technologies‑based engineered solution and R Systems’ managed HPC-as-a-service, Spire runs radio‑occultation‑driven numerical weather models on scalable bare‑metal clusters to deliver near‑real‑time data and higher‑quality forecasts used by customers including NASA, the US Air Force and ECMWF. Dell Technologies’ infrastructure enabled pay‑as‑you‑go scaling that avoided large capital outlays, accelerated analytics, expanded advanced maritime and aviation tracking, and produced measurable operational benefits such as improved routing/fuel savings for shipping and more accurate weather predictions worldwide.
