Case Study: Moreno Valley Unified School District achieves ransomware-resilient data protection with Dell Technologies

A Dell Technologies Case Study

Preview of the Moreno Valley Unified School District Case Study

School district gears up against cyber threats

Moreno Valley Unified School District, a California K–12 district serving a large low‑income population, faced escalating ransomware risk after nearby districts were attacked and needed stronger protection for on‑prem student, employee and financial PII. The district worked with Dell Technologies, deploying Dell EMC PowerProtect DD series appliances, the PowerProtect Cyber Recovery solution with CyberSense analytics, and Avamar to modernize backups and harden recovery capabilities.

Dell Technologies implemented an air‑gapped Cyber Recovery vault with CyberSense machine‑learning inspection, backed by PowerProtect DD appliances and Avamar source‑based deduplication, providing isolated, inspectable backup copies and efficient storage. The solution delivered tangible benefits — about a 100x average daily compression rate on PowerProtect DD, increased retention and confidence that PII is recoverable after an attack — giving the district faster recovery options and greater peace of mind.
