A Dell Technologies Case Study
Mercy Ships, a global nonprofit that delivers free ship‑based medical care, needed a compact, flexible IT platform to support a new hospital ship (and improvements to its onshore data center) years before launch. Facing daily application slowdowns and a patchwork of vendors, Mercy Ships chose Dell Technologies for a consolidated, software‑defined solution that could run hospital systems, logistics, medical records and virtual desktops using Dell EMC VxRail hyper‑converged appliances, Isilon storage, Data Domain with Data Protection software, and VMware Horizon 7.
Dell Technologies implemented a consolidated infrastructure — 12 VxRail appliances on the new ship plus additional VxRail nodes onshore, along with Isilon, Data Domain and data protection software — enabling flawless, zero‑downtime migrations, faster and more reliable applications, reduced storage/network needs through compression and deduplication, and saved rack space. The result: boosted staff efficiency and patient services, minimized outage risk, and the ability to operate a ship 50% larger while maintaining the same IT headcount, positioning Mercy Ships to scale its healthcare reach.
