Keeping Critical Patients Safe and Treated Using SD-WAN

MD Anderson Cancer Center, a world-leading cancer treatment and research center in Houston, faced aging, inflexible WANs that couldn’t keep up with critical applications as more remote sites and work‑from‑home staff were added. Radiologists struggled with bandwidth‑heavy CT and MRI images, and COVID‑19 accelerated the need for secure, reliable home connectivity. Working with Dell Technologies and its partner VMware, MD Anderson turned to VMware SD‑WAN (VeloCloud) — including VMware SD‑WAN Edge 510/540 appliances and the SD‑WAN Orchestrator — to address these challenges.

Dell Technologies helped deliver an SD‑WAN solution built around VMware SD‑WAN that introduced automation, zero‑touch provisioning and centralized visibility, enabling fast roll‑out to more than 200 offices and remote workers. MD Anderson deployed hundreds of Edges (700+ initially, expanding to 1,000 with an emergency shipment of 500 devices) so staff could self‑install and radiologists nationwide could reliably transmit and analyze large images; the result was increased diagnostic throughput (more scans per day), faster time to billing, improved resiliency and seamless collaboration across hundreds of clinicians.
