Johnsonville keeps SAP HANA ERP humming with more than 90% backup speed improvements and 100% restore success rates

Johnsonville LLC, the nation’s leading sausage brand, relied on an SAP HANA ERP to coordinate manufacturing, distribution and sales but faced unreliable tape-based IBM TSM backups that could exceed 24 hours and produced incomplete restores. To address this risk to production uptime, Johnsonville turned to Dell Technologies, deploying Dell EMC PowerProtect appliances, DD Boost, Data Protection Suite and Data Domain to replace the failing tape backup system.

Dell Technologies’ solution delivered dramatic improvements: full backups shrank from 12–24 hours to about 1 hour (more than a 90% improvement), restores sped from 3–4 hours to roughly 30 minutes and restore success rose from 75% to 100%. The Dell Technologies deployment also enabled 30:1 deduplication (5x storage savings), more frequent backups and self-service backup/restore for database administrators, ensuring reliable SAP HANA uptime and simpler management.
